The Rowan Clinical Piercing Standard® is our rigorous set of protocols and training guidelines designed to put safety first at every step of the ear piercing experience.
The standard includes:
Piercings performed exclusively by licensed Piercing Nurses
Hypoallergenic jewelry
Comprehensive aftercare education and support, because aftercare is never an afterthought.
Rowan is the only ear piercing studio supported by a dedicated Medical Advisory Board. This group of healthcare experts ensures our standards are evidence-based, regularly reviewed, and aligned with the latest medical research.

We pierce and change Rowan jewelry for the outer ear, including the lobe, upper lobe, mid helix, helix, forward helix, flat, conch, and tragus. Placement and age requirements may vary slightly by state and studio location. We do not pierce daith, rook, or industrial placements.
Lobe piercings are available starting at 2 months old, with a DTaP vaccine. Ear piercings beyond the lobes are available for customers 5 and up.
We offer nose piercings at select studios. To learn more and find participating locations, click here.
Rowan offers two safe piercing options: a hand-pressured device or a hollow needle. Your best choice may depend on age, piercing placement, earring preference, or budget!
The device uses a Rowan Piercing Nurse's hand pressure (and complete control) to safely guide, place, and pierce. This instrument contains a single-use, sterile cartridge with sterile starter stud earrings that pierce the ear. This is the only option for children under 5 years old. Our hand-pressured instrument allows gentle, direct control with every piercing and does not rely on spring-loaded mechanisms that pierce forcefully.
We also offer piercings with a hollow needle. Hollow needles are the only piercing option for parts of the ear other than the outer perimeter. Needle piercings are available for ages 5 and up, at the discretion of a Rowan Piercing Nurse. Check out your location’s Studio Details page for specific details.
Needle placement availability may vary by studio.
At Rowan, we pierce all ages! For babies and children under 5, we use a gentle, hand-pressurized device to perform the piercing procedure. We do not use hollow needles for this age group. You can learn more about what to bring and vaccination requirements within these FAQs.
